The Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster is one of just three similar cars surviving in the world today. “This 540K balances strength with sweeping lines and style, and its history is unique,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “In talking with Jim about this car, I was impressed by the time and thought invested in this restoration. 1937→1940 Horch 853A Sportroadster To compete with the luxury cars of Mercedes-Benz and even some great French marques like Delahaye and Delage, the Auto-Union empire had Horch. After WW1, Horch represented the upper end of this conglomerate that also included Audi, DKW and Wanderer. The trend reached a peak in 1937 with the introduction of the 853A Spezial (or Special) Roadster. The 853 can Fred Kemp, who had owned a 540K and spent 30 years in pursuit of a 500K Special Roadster, learned of the car and finally purchased the unfinished restoration project in 1995. Kemp sent the car to Franz Prahl Klassiche Automobile in Germany, where the restoration and rebody, at a reported cost of some $1.5 million, were completed in June 2000.

This 540K Sport Cabriolet sold for $973,501, including buyer’s commission, at the RM Monterey Auction, held August 15-16, 2003. Prior to World War II, Mercedes-Benz was arguably the world’s most prestigious European automaker, followed by Rolls-Royce, Maybach, Horch, and Hispano. They were the cars of kings and captains of industry alike.

Notably, all Mercedes-Benz 540K models were highly desirable when new. Chassis 408383 was no exception and over the course of the ensuing three decades it found its way to Sweden from where it was purchased by noted collector and trader Tom Barrett and eventually passed into the long-term ownership of Major General William Lyon and the Lyon Family Collection where it would remain until 2011.
